Thomas Martin Huber 

Nov. 4, 1919 – May 30, 2014 

Mr. Thomas Martin Huber, age 94 died peacefully Friday, May 30, 2014 at Bermuda Village in Bermuda Run, NC, at his and his wife Marti’s home for over 25 years. Mr. Huber was born November 4, 1919 in Highland, Illinois, the son of Martin and Ida Huber. He was a graduate of the University of Illinois in Ceramic Engineering and was President of his Junior Class. He served in WWII in the Corps of Engineers and retired from the US Army Reserves with the rank of Lt. Colonel. Mr. Huber joined Owens-Illinois in 1946 as a project engineer in the company’s glass container general engineering department in Alton, Ill. During the next 10 years he held a variety of increasingly important management positions with the Glass Container Division, and in 1956 was named Vice President and General Manager of Owens-Illinois de Cuba, the company’s first overseas operation. In 1960 he was named Vice President of the International Division responsible for industry relations and area management of North America, Caribbean and Far East. In 1961 the family moved to Belgium and he became Vice President and General Manager of both Belgian manufacturing plants. In 1965 he took over the management of operations in Venezuela and Columbia. In 1968 he was named General Manager of European Operations. Subsequently he was elected as Vice President of the company in 1973 and General Manager of worldwide business development in 1980. In this capacity he traveled to and developed business with China in the early days when it had just been opened to the West. He retired from Owens-Illinois as a Senior Vice President. Mr. Huber was an avid reader and golfer. He enjoyed fine food and wine. While living in Europe, he was named a Conseiller du Vin de Bordeaux and was listed in Who’s Who in America. He especially loved spending time with his family. He was loved by all for his open mindedness, great heart and wonderful sense of humor. He was the essential “fellow well met”. Surviving Mr. Huber is his beloved wife Martha of 70 years, his son Timothy of Boston, his daughter Martha A. Scavone of Jesi, Italy, six grandchildren and one great granddaughter. A funeral mass will be said for Mr. Huber at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons, NC at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the donor’s choice.
