Steven Lee Brookshire Sr.

On Sunday, Sept. 20, Mr. Steven Lee Brookshire Sr. grew his wings and went home to be with the Lord. He passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family. Brookshire was born Aug. 1, 1947, in Forsyth County to Mabel Sebastian and the late Charles Milton Brookshire Jr. Brookshire proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a decorated soldier and every bit the hero being awarded two Bronze Stars with Valor, Air Medal, Purple Heart, two Army Commendation Medals with Valor, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Service Medal and a National Defense Service Medal. Once he returned from service in Vietnam, he worked for RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company where he developed lifelong friendships with coworkers and took great pride in his work until his retirement after 35 years. He enjoyed fitness and working out at Jack King’s Gym where his friends became brothers to him and he was a member for more than 25 years. Brookshire lived his life with honesty and a great sense of integrity. Brookshire always had a quiet disposition, he was kind, caring and always there for those in need. His favorite hobbies were playing golf, listening to oldies and dancing. He loved watching western movies, golf, football and college basketball. He was an avid fan of Wake Forest athletics and the Washington Redskins. His favorite pastime was taking trips to the coast with the ones that he loved. Brookshire is survived by son Steven Brookshire Jr. of Tobaccoville, daughter Amber  Burleson (Brian) of Clemmons and his life partner for over 23 years, Shirley Bell Moser of Winston-Salem. He was affectionately called Papa by his grandchildren, Felicia Brookshire of Winston-Salem, Zachary Havens, Jonathan Burleson, Jackson Burleson and Bryson Burleson of Clemmons. He will be truly missed by his K9 companion and sidekick, Max. He was loved by all that knew him and will carry on in the hearts of many. His family is left with  many wonderful memories.

A funeral service was held on Friday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m. at Frank Vogler & Sons Funeral Home with Tom King officiating. The family received friends for a visitation at 1 p.m. Burial followed the service at Parklawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Trellis Supportive Care or Wounded Warrior Project. The family also wishes to thank Lory Puckett for her incredible support, compassion and guidance and the wonderful staff at Trellis Supportive Care.

Art Ford

Psalms 1:1-3 — “How blessed is the man who does not walk in counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers — But his delight is in the law of the Lord and on His Law, the teachings of God, he meditates day and night — And he will be like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season, his leaf also shall not fade or wither, and everything he does shall prosper and come to maturity.”

Art Ford, 73, was carried by angels to his heavenly father’s house on Sept. 22, 2020, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia. Ford was a devoted Christian husband, father, Papa/Poppy, son, and brother. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carol; his daughter, Ruth Tilley (Joey); his son, Mark Ford (Miki); and his grandchildren, Jack and Asher Ford, Amanda, Preston, and Alyssa Tilley. He is also survived by his mother, June Ford; his brother, David Ford (Cathi); his sister-in-law, Barbara Lane; and three nieces, Christine, Rebecca, and Miranda. He was preceded in death by his father, Jim Ford; his mother and father-in-law, Robert and Lovely Lane; and his brother-in-law, Steve Lane.

Ford was a devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church for 50 years. He served as an interpreter for the deaf for 20 years and greatly loved the deaf community and the beauty of sign language. He coached Calvary’s men’s softball teams for 30 years and ministered and became a good friend to his team members. Ford also participated in mission trips sharing the love of Christ. He and Carol served making six trips to Puerto Rico (four trips with their children) working in summer camps for the deaf. He served on a team to Brazil to help build a church; also, he helped to build a home for missionaries in Arkansas. Ford served with N.C. Baptist Men making six trips to Gulfport, Mississippi, to help rebuild homes for Hurricane Katrina victims. He found great joy in helping others. Ford also served in mission trips with International Mission Board in Israel, Jordan and Egypt. He faithfully shared Christ’s love through the skills and the gifts that the Lord gave him.

Ford retired from AMP/TYCO with 33 years service as a senior quality control engineer. Ford enjoyed hiking in the mountains and going to the beach with his family and friends. He loved being involved in his children and grandchildren’s activities and being involved in their lives. He also enjoyed trout fishing and hunting with his father-in-law and brother-in-law. He carved and painted beautiful birds and won several ribbons and awards. Ford also loved to fly and co-pilot with his father.

He dearly loved and was very thankful for his family and his Christian friends. Ford was forever thankful that the Lord gave him and Carol their children, Ruth and Mark. He loved being a father and treasured his grandchildren and continually prayed for his family. He was a caregiver to his father-in-law and to his parents. He faithfully took care of Carol during serious illnesses. He was truly a good and faithful Christian with a servant’s heart.

Ford will be greatly missed.

Funeral services were Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020, at Calvary Baptist Church on Peacehaven Road. Visitation/viewing was at 10:30 a.m. and the service was at 11 a.m. with Pastor Will Toburen officiating. Due to COVID, graveside services were be private.

Charlie Frank Fulp

Mr. Charlie Frank Fulp, 85, of Lewisville, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020.

Fulp was born April 1, 1935, in Forsyth County to Julius and Grace Fulp. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company with 39 years of service as an engineer. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church as well as a deacon for more than 20 years at Immanuel Baptist Church. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening and working in his yard. He loved his family deeply and will be fondly remembered as a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. In addition to his parents, Fulp was preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah Hodges.

Fulp is survived by his wife, Carolyn Cromer Fulp; children, Donna Fulp and Randy Fulp (Angie); grandsons, Greg Burcham and Daniel Burcham (Lindsay); and great-grandchildren, Hailey Burcham and her mother Shelley Garnick, Kyleigh Burcham, Gracie Burcham, and Madison Ayers.

A celebration of Fulp’s life will be held Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020, at 3 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church in the Fellowship Building with Pastor Josh Boles and Pastor Samuel Silva officiating. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery.

Peggy Carol Patterson Henning

Mrs. Peggy Carol Patterson Henning passed away into the sweet arms of Jesus on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2020, surrounded by family. She was born on Aug. 8, 1939, to the late Bright Leak Patterson and Alma Rachel Taylor Patterson. Henning was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a friend to all. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Richard Henning; son Taylor  Henning (Cindy); grandsons, Austin Black (Amanda), Josh Black (Tiffany), Travis Black (Morgan); five great-grandchildren, Marley, Skyler, Charlie Grace, Waylon, Mylah; and sister Ann Shoaf. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Dallas and David Patterson. She was active in church serving on the GA’s (Girls in Action) Nursery Hospitality, Compassion Prison Ministry, Joy Club and clothes closet. Henning worked at Hanes Hosiery, Messiah Moravian preschool and Lewisville UMC afterschool. She loved to cook for everyone and was the queen of the Candy Bar Cake. She loved to travel and listen to southern gospel music. A graveside service was held at Lewisville Baptist Church on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020, at 3 p.m. with Pastor Bill Messer officiating. Robert ‘Robbie’ Kennon Mills

Mr. Robert “Robbie” Kennon Mills, loving father, grandfather, son, and brother, 50, died on Tuesday Sept. 22, 2020, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Oct. 5, 1969, in Surry County to Tommy Ray McCann and Nellie Branch McCann. He was a Davie County paramedic for 20 years and also worked as a firefighter for the Advance Fire Department for 20 years. Surviving is his son, Matthew Mills (Michelle); granddaughter Brooklynn Mills; parents; two sisters Melissa Connell (David) and Misty McCann; and brother Lee McCann. A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 2020, at Advance United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family received friends from noon-2 p.m. at Advance United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Advance United Methodist Church, the Advance Fire Department and the American Heart Association. Margaret ‘Peggy’ Johnson Pogue

Margaret “Peggy” Johnson Pogue passed away peacefully Sept. 23, 2020, at Trinity Glen.

She was born in Greensboro on April 11, 1931, to John Manley and Nancy Cummins Johnson.

She was fiercely independent, proudly working until she was almost 80. She was a people person, and lived her life as such, most always surrounded by many.

Her love for cooking was closely-knit with the company it brought. She reveled in the merriness of large gatherings and holidays, especially St. Patrick’s Day, a favorite of her Irish-Catholic husband.

Pogue grew up in the Moravian faith and cherished the traditions that came with it.

Her later years were filled with the simple joys of life — delighting in the warmth of the sunshine on her face, the airplanes passing overhead, amongst the love of her family, who were always nearby.

Pogue will be remembered by her sweet demeanor, graceful spirit, beautiful smile and stunning blue eyes.

Preceded in death by her husband, Howard W. Pogue Jr. and son-in-law Chris Livengood.

Survived by her seven children: Nancy Pogue Livengood, Mike Pogue, John Pogue, Jim Pogue (Sarah), Carol Pogue Caudle (Don), Kathy Pogue Johnson (Mike), Kevin Pogue (Kim); 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Mary Ann Stevens and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be conducted on Friday Oct. 9, 2020, at Mt. Pleasant Church in Tanglewood; a Johnson gathering place. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Alzheimer’s research, a cause near and dear to the family. Pogue courageously fought for 10 years.

Betty Lou Smith

Betty Lou Smith, 89, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 5, 1931, in Walnut Cove, the daughter of John and Cornelia Smith. She was a member of Advance First Baptist Church and was retired from AT&T. Smith was an avid reader, loved to dance and enjoyed listening to music. She loved her family who was her heart’s desire. “For your heart will always pursue what you value as your treasure,”— Matt. 6:21. Smith was a true grateful southern woman who had fire in her soul and grace in her heart. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Michael Creel; her parents; a sister, Virginia Tuttle and two brothers, Jack and Joe Smith. Survivors include daughter Ginger Bennett of Advance; three grandchildren, Jacquelyn Smith of Clemmons, Laurin Getter (Van) of King and Taylor Bennett of Advance; three great-grandchildren, Megan Smith, Cody Clark and Ryan Getter and many nieces, nephews and friends. A celebration of Smith’s life was held at 2 p.m. Saturday Sept. 26, 2020, at Advance First Baptist Church with Pastor Rodney Hellard officiating. Burial was private.
