Jerry Douglas Baity

Mr. Jerry Douglas Baity, 73, lovingly known as “Doug” and “Paw Paw,” passed away Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2020, at Forsyth Medical Center. Baity was born Oct. 4, 1947, in Forsyth County to Clifton Harding “Jack” and Geraldine Caudle Baity. He was a member of Huntsville Baptist Church. Baity proudly served his country in the Vietnam War, earning four medals. He was a carpenter by trade, retiring from Titus Construction Company. Baity enjoyed farming, but even more, he loved his family. In 1970, he married Kathy Ladd Baity, who preceded him in death. Baity was proudest of being Paw Paw to Kacey Cleary, Matthew Cleary, Tyler Bryant, Karleigh Bryant, Luke Cleary, James Bryant and Max Bryant, and he looked forward to time spent with them. In addition to his wife, Doug was preceded in death by his father and a grandchild, Andrew Douglas Cleary. Baity is survived by his two daughters, Rhonda Cleary (Chad) and Michelle Bryant (Adam) all of Yadkinville; his seven grandchildren of Yadkinville; his mother Geraldine Baity of Yadkinville; his sister Gale Redding of Yadkinville and his two brothers, Dale Baity (Kathy) and Randy Baity, both of Yadkinville. A graveside service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, 2020, at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Open Air Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. Dennis Shaw and Rev. Sue Beauchamp Ellis

Mrs. Sue Beauchamp Ellis, 87, of Advance, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2020, at Trellis Supportive Care. She was born Oct. 11, 1932, in Davie County to Anna Rights Beauchamp and Charlie Roy Beauchamp Sr. Ellis was a charter member of Redland Pentecostal Holiness Church, now Redland Church, IPHC and retired from Hanes Knitting Company. Ellis was an avid gardener and was well known through the community for her baking and making Moravian cookies. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Ellis, in 1974 and one brother, Charlie Roy Beauchamp Jr. Surviving are her two daughters, Carol Jean Cashwell (Johnny) and Debra Bradshaw, both of Advance; four grandchildren, Chandler Bradshaw (Sarah), Kasey Cashwell (fiancé Austin Hamm), Kelsey Cashwell and Peyton Bradshaw; three sisters, Elsie Whitaker, Laverne Hicks and Betty Grey Pardue (David) and several nieces and nephews. The family received friends from 2-3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 2020, at Redland Church, IPHC. A funeral service followed at 3 p.m. with Pastor Dave Richardson Jr. and Tim Dunn officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The family would like to thank Ellis’ in-home sitters and the staff at Trinity Elms for the love and care they gave her.

Shelby Snyder Fishel

Mrs. Shelby Snyder Fishel, 80, of Winston-Salem, passed away of natural causes on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2020. Fishel was born in Forsyth County on Jan. 6, 1940, to the late Charles Edward Snyder and Elva Reid Snyder. She was of the Moravian faith. Fishel is survived by her husband of 61 years, Lloyd Fishel; two sons, Aubrey (Mona) and Bryan (Sharon); one daughter, Sherri Bogue (Glenn); and three grandchildren, Austin Bogue, Erika Bogue, and Jordan Bogue. A private family graveside service will be held. Brenda Jo Burnette Redmond

Mrs. Brenda Jo Burnette Redmond, 73, passed away Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020, surrounded by her family at Forsyth Medical Center. Redmond was born in Danville, Virginia, to the late Melvin Burnette and Dorothy Arnold Burnette on Sept. 6, 1947. She was married to the love of her life, David, for more than 56 years. Redmond loved to go camping, listening to gospel music and, most of all, she loved to go shopping. Redmond loved her family, she was a devoted “Nanny,” not to just her family, but a “Granny” to everyone. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Levola Robertson. She is survived by her husband, David Redmond; children, Tammy Redmond (Lynette); Dwayne Redmond (Diana) and Todd Redmond (Lauren); grandchildren, Brandon and Haley Redmond, Marie Thomason; great-grandchildren, Aiden and Adalynn Redmond, Carson and Aubrey Bailey; brother, Wayne Burnette (Kay); Lavanda Livengood (David) and Delores Robertson (Vic). An entombment was held at 1 p.m., Monday, Oct. 5, 2020, at Westlawn Gardens of Memory open air mausoleum with Rev. VG Robertson and Rev. Robbie Sizemore officiating.

Henry Thomas ‘Tommy’ Ridings

Mr. Henry Thomas “Tommy” Ridings, 79, of Lewisville, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020. Ridings was born in Forsyth County to the late John Thomas Ridings and Mary Evelyn Moser Ridings on Dec. 24, 1940. Ridings love farming and gardening. He had a mechanical mindset and he would “tinker” around with machine parts to see what he could make. Ridings was a loving family man who loved his wife and daughter. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister and three brothers. He is survived by his loving wife, Ann Whitman Ridings; daughter, Kim Ridings; brother, Jerry Ridings; sisters, Ina “Dolly” Llewellyn and Lillian Pegram. A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, 2020, at Warners Chapel Church of Christ Cemetery, Clemmons, with Kevin Rutherford officiating. The family would like to thank Trellis Supportive Care for all their love and support. Louis Johnston Utsey

Mr. Louis Johnston Utsey, of Advance, the very definition of a kind-hearted man of integrity who lived out his faith in Jesus Christ, entered heaven on Friday, Oct. 9, 2020. Pastor Gary Chapman had once said, “Live your life so that any day will be a good place to stop.” And God chose to call Louis homeward from the Oak Valley golf course, where he was relishing time with close friends.

He was born in his favorite season of the year, Oct. 22, 1950, in St. George, S.C., to Carlisle Louis Utsey and Sabie Johnston Utsey. He enjoyed a small-town community and excelled in sports. While in high school, he met Susan Evans of Orangeburg, S.C., over a glass of lemonade, and this relationship flourished as he completed the College of Pharmacy at the University of South Carolina.

Louis and Susan married on Oct. 13, 1973. They lived in their own way until blessedly yielding to Christ at age of 42 and finding profound, settled satisfaction as Jesus reoriented their lives. Utsey will be remembered by everyone who knew him for his generous spirit, sense of humor, willingness to pray with others, and his infectious hospitality. A golf buddy said that Utsey lived his life with a Christian witness rarely equalled. He delighted in studying and teaching God’s word. He was a member of Grace Bible Church where he served as a deacon and in other capacities. Professionally, he was blessed with a 41-year career in pharmacy, nurturing hundreds of relationships and strengthening the health of many.

Most recently he savored retirement to the point of wearing his LL Bean bedroom slippers into the grocery store, just because he could. He could build a computer, cook fabulous foods, and produce a flowerbed of beauty. A familiar sight in Advance was Utsey’s little white pickup truck with the salvation message on the tailgate. He wanted others to know the blessings of trusting Christ.

Utsey was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William Carlisle Utsey. Surviving are his wife, Susan Evans Utsey, of Advance; sister-in-law, Mary Harley Utsey of St. George, S.C.; nieces Christi Utsey Arroyo of St. George, S.C., and Carla Alicia Utsey, also of St. George. A host of dear and close friends rise up and call Utsey one of the finest men they have known, all because of what Jesus has done in his heart.

It is good to mark a life well-lived. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2020 from 5-7 p.m. at Grace Bible Church, 3904 Woodview Drive, Winston-Salem. A graveside celebration of life in the Lord will take place on at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2020, at Westlawn Gardens of Memory, 6135 Ridgecrest Point, Winston-Salem. Pastors Rich Powell, Dwight Ball and Bobby Locklear will officiate. You are welcome to bring a chair to the graveside area. Thank you for observing social distancing and wearing a mask.

On Dec. 2, 2019 Louis wrote some words that are poignant: I have always been grateful to God for the love of my life, Susan Janice Evans Utsey. Susan has always been a blessing, encourager, study-mate, teacher, and buddy. My life’s desire is that you know Jesus the way that Susan and I do. May God prosper and protect you in all things for His Glory. God blesses, Louis.

So the most important question of your life: Are you saved? God says that all people need a righteousness which is not our own. And he offers this gift.

Romans 3:22-24 explains that it comes from God, through personal faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. Louis would say surely you realize you are a sinner. Just take God at his word, call on him, and receive forgiveness and eternal life.

God’s power will save you, keep you, and enable you to live a victorious Christian life. This is what you saw in Louis. He lived and talked for God. And now he is more alive than ever. All praise rising to God!
